Home (2019): Text

Bethlehem, PA – 2019

Home was produced in my Sophomore Spring at Lafayette College in my second formal production class, Making Media II. In this course we were asked to create two projects within the semester. However, the details about what these projects would be was left up to us.

For me, this project became a way to reflect on the definition of home. At the time I was commuting to Lafayette College from my childhood home of more than 20 years. I had spent the majority of my life in the Lehigh Valley, particularly Bethlehem, while friends and loved ones had regularly come and gone. Now, as a 19 year-old, I was presented with the possibility that our house would no longer be our home. My parents had begun considering job opportunities out of state, and discussed selling our house.

I found myself caught between an excitement for newness outside of Bethlehem, but also an anxiety about leaving. As much as I wanted to explore new places and grow with the distance, I also wondered how things would change. What would my bedroom look like when someone else was in it? Would the next people to live here cover the windows in decorations for the holidays? After spending so much time within the same four walls, I daydreamed about future spaces and reflected on what "home" means to me.

I collected a series of shots that I had taken around Bethlehem, some in my favorite places and some of my favorite local views. I then coupled this footage with a short journal entry I had written thinking about home. Together, the piece became a visual poem.

This project was featured in the end of year Student Film Fest in Landis Cinema at Lafayette College in May 2019. Home was created using a Canon T5i, iPhone 8, and audio recorded on a MacBook Pro.
